Nineteen Johnston County high school students completed Junior Leadership Johnston County June 17-21.

Sponsored by Duke Energy, Junior Leadership Johnston is a program to assist emerging youth in their efforts to prepare for leadership positions in business, community, education, and government affairs.

Hosted by Johnston Community College, the program is open to rising high school juniors, lasts one week and provides the students with an opportunity to visit and hear from leaders at local businesses and industries, health services, nonprofit agencies, local tourist attractions, and county government including law enforcement agencies.

Students apply for the program in February of their sophomore year.

The following students were selected and participated in Junior Leadership Johnston 2019: from Clayton High School, Davis Ashley, Sarah Harte, and Shelby Rairigh; from Cleveland High School, Mattie Callahan and Taylor Phillips; from Corinth Holders High School, Sydney Carson; from Johnston County Career and Technical Leadership Academy, Allison Brown and Bryce Wagner; from Johnston County Early College, Jaime Gomez; from Neuse Charter School, AJ Boyce; from North Johnston High School, Seham Saleh and Kyla Winborne; from Princeton High School, Tinsley Moore, Nate Starling, and Gray Thomas; from Smithfield-Selma High School, Jordan Carroll; and from South Johnston High School, Jarah Newton, Carrie Stevens, and Kendall Weaver.

Highlights of this year’s program included tours of Johnston County Industries, Studio TK, Ava Gardner Museum, Johnston County Heritage Center, Johnston UNC Healthcare, Harbor of Johnston County, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Selma and Johnston County government offices, and others. The students also met with Dr. Ross Renfrow, superintendent of Johnston County Schools, and his cabinet members and portrayed county commissioners and county agency representatives where they were given the task of presenting a mock zoning that needed approval.

The weeklong program concluded with an evening banquet where the students made presentations based upon the week’s activities and received certificates of completion.
