The Appearance Committee of the Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce recently noted the landscaping work that has been completed along East Market Street (US 70 Business) in Smithfield. The Chamber, along with several financial partners, raised over $60,000 to install shrubbery beds with crepe myrtles, clean the CSX Railroad Underpass and remove unsightly concrete walls along a stretch of the highway between College Road and Bright Leaf Boulevard.

Working along with the Chamber have been the Town of Smithfield, Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation and the Smithfield Appearance Commission. In addition to these organizations, other financial partners have included CSX Railroad, First Citizens Bank, Heavner’s Furniture Market and an anonymous contributor.

The project is part of the Chamber’s community vision plan, which addresses entranceways into Smithfield and Selma. The Appearance Committee has already started work on a similar project at Exit 97 on Interstate 95 in Selma.
